Chelsea Hotel

Last Saturday, Mae and I attended the afternoon performance of Chelsea Hotel, a stage show about the memories of a struggling writer's tumultuous love live set to the music and lyrics of the songs of Leonard Cohen.

The show was very interesting and different. In many ways it can be viewed as a celebration of selected Cohen's works set to many different arrangements to suit the atmosphere and mood of the writer's mental struggle to come to grips with his love life. I must say I have never experienced Cohen's music and poetry in this way before. I specifically enjoyed many of the different arrangements of Cohen's popular songs. We were also impressed by the versatility of the players in being able to sing well and play many different instruments.

Chelsea Hotel is currently playing at the Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver and will run till March 3, 2012.

'I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
you were famous, your heart was a legend.
You told me again you preferred handsome men
but for me you would make an exception.
And clenching your fist for the ones like us
who are oppressed by the figures of beauty,
you fixed yourself, you said, "Well never mind,
we are ugly but we have the music."'

Chelsea Hotel No.2, music and lyrics by Leonard Cohen

The Passing of Dennis Ritchie | Print |

The Passing of Dennis Ritchie

Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie, more commonly known as Dennis Ritchie, passed away on October 8, 2011.  While the recent demise of Apple's front man, Steve Jobs received world-wide attention, Dennis's passing was not even mentioned on some of the mainstream news outlets.  Possibly, only those who have studied computer science or have been involved with programming, would have heard about him.  This is a great shame, such is the importance of Dennis's work that anyone who has used a computer, Internet or smartphone would have benefited from his contribution to computer science and technology!  So here is my little contribution in paying tribute to him.

the c programming language book Photo Credit: Wikipedia

With his long beard and hair, Dennis Ritchie was the archetypical computer scientist and hacker.  He was best known as the creator of the C computer programming language and one of the original developers of the Unix operating system.  The influence that C has over an entire generation of programmers and software developers as well as latter computer languages cannot be overstated.  I still remember first learning about C around 1986/87 using the classic Kernighan and Ritchie book on the language, "The C Programming Language".

In addition to C, Dennis of course was one of the key developers of Unix.  Unix played a pivotal role in influencing either directly or indirectly all the popular modern operating systems in use today.  Without Unix there will not be Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, iOS or Android - the last two systems of course powering the majority of mobile devices in use today.

So it is indeed a great loss to modern technology and to the computing world in particular with the passing of Dennis Ritchie.  However, we may take solace in the thought that while Dennis is no longer here with us, his ideas and legacy live on and everytime we use our computers, the Internet or smartphones, we are touched by a little bit of his genius.

Two Ships Passing

two ships

Took this photo over the weekend at the Vancouver Cruise Terminal. These two cruise ships reminded me of the poem by Henry Wadsworh Longfellow, which goes something like this:

"Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing,
Only a signal shown and a distant voice in the darkness;
So on the ocean of life we pass and speak one another,
Only a look and a voice, then darkness again and a silence."

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Happy 20th Birthday!

linux logo This August celebrates the 20th anniversary of Linux and the official celebration takes place at the LinuxCon in Vancouver, August 17-19, 2011.  Now, some (or many) of you may be wondering what the big deal is or for that matter what the heck is Linux anyway!  For those who do not know, Linux is the name of a free and open source (FOSS) computer operating system that runs on a wide variety of devices ranging from handheld phones to supercomputers, including of course the ubiquitous desktop computer that is in use in our homes and offices.  (I will not go into the details of what Linux and FOSS are, for those interested, the previous links should provide a good starting point.)

From its humble beginnings in August 1991 where it started as a hobby by Linus Torvalds to write an operating system, to the present day where it is deployed in all sorts of computing and electronic devices imaginable, Linux has surely come a long, long way.  What makes it more remarkable is that all this is achieved without Linux being owned by any commercial entity.  By and large the development of the Linux kernel is done by a community of software developers, working either on their own or with the blessings of their employers, from all over the world, with Linus Torvalds as the main co-ordinator.

The pervasiveness of Linux can be seen as it powers supercomputers, stock exchanges and servers running online services and websites used by millions of us such as Facebook, Amazon and Google, to name just a few.  On the other end of the scale, several smartphone platforms including the popular Android system are based on Linux.  In between these environments, we have Linux running on desktop and laptop systems.   This just goes to show that Linux is now very much part and parcel of our digital world, and we make use of it every day, whether we realise it or not.  Not too bad for a software that is freely available and modifiable by anyone who is interested :)

So here is a very happy 20th birthday to Linux and to me the next 20 years will be even more exciting.  And, oh yes, by the way, this website is powered by Linux and open source too!
